According to Al-Quran, Hajrat Ibrahim (AS) was told to sacrifice His son and He showed his willingness to do that. Hajrat Ibrahim (AS) was about to sacrifice His loving son Ismael to please Almighty Allah. Then a voice of heaven stopped Him and replaced His son with a lamb and allowed Him to immolate that lamb in instead of sacrificing His son as a “great sacrifice”. Allah was so pleased with Prophet Ibrahim (AS) as well as Ismael Who is regarded one of the greatest Prophet and an ancestor of Muhammad (SM). After that, He made that demonstration of sacrifice and faith a permanent part of a Muslim’s life. The same story also appears in the Bibel but in a different way.
Eid-Ul- Adha plays a vital role in every Muslim’s life which has much significant importance. It teaches a Muslim to sacrifice his/her most favorite thing for Almighty Allah. It instigates and exhorts a Muslim to do more ibadat to get more reward from Allah and to please Him.
On the day of Eid Ul Adha, Muslims re-enact Ibrahim’s obedience by slaughtering any halal animal like lamb, cow, goat, camel etcetera according to their affordability after playing the Salat of eid to show an honor to Allah. They keep one third of the meal, another one third part give to the relatives and friends and the other one third of the meal donate to the poor and needy. The giving of the charity in the form of money, food and clothes to the homeless or poor is the key tradition of Eid-Ul-Adha. It helps to dispel the conflict between the rich and the poor and makes a strong bonding among the Muslims.
This festival is meant to make a Muslim more virtuous in his/her deeds. It should not be meant only to offer sacrifice; rather it is meant to learn hidden lessons of freedom from selfish desires and to elevate a Muslim from anything that hinders his ability to fulfill his responsibilities as a Muslim. Allah says in the Quran:
“Their meat will not reach to Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches to Him is piety from you. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and give good tidings to the doers of good.”(Surah Haji:37)
